In the year 827 Emperor Junna (the 53rd emperor,淳和天皇) fell ill. The divinators were called in and it was discovered that on the very morning of the day he fell ill a tree in the grounds of an Inari Jinja had been cut down to be used in the construction of a pagoda at Toji Temple in Kyoto. This was deemed to be a sin and an offering was immediately made to Inari Okami. This resulted in the Inari inja being given Subordinate Fifth Ranking; in 1039 it was designated as one of the top seven of the 22 Shrines. Jumping ahead to 1871 it became a Kanpeisha and in 1945 it was given its current name.
