The shrines home page tells us that it is the Genkuro (源九郎) referred to in the nursery rhyme “Let's play, Yamato no Yamato no Genkuro-san. “
During the reign of the 38th emperor, Tenchi (661-671), a member of the Heguri clan, Matori, attempted to seize the throne. The emperor ordered Otomo no Komaro to quell the rebellion. One of the first things the latter did was to pray to the kami for success; among these was Genbyo Inari, the first name of the kami enshrined at the Genkuro Inari Jinja. Genbyo transformed himself into a warrior and with the aid of numerous white foxes was able to put down the rebellion and bring peace to the land.
