The 10,000+ Tenman/Tenjin shrines are dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the first actual person in Japanese history to be deified and he is regarded as the Kami of Scholarship.  A listof the the ten most important shrines follows. The first two on the list, Kitano Tenman-gū and Dazaifu Tenman-gū, are undoubtedly the most important of all the Tenman/Tenjin shrines, and are always included in the Big 3 Tenjinja (三天神社): the number 3 spot is disputed.
